Some notes from practice last Thursday.

In the Scythe:
The 'barn' figure I think we decided to try the lift off of sticks as one
move by everyone rather than each corner lifting their sticks. This is at
the phrase (and the ripe and bearded barley) to allow the #7 to burst out
on "is monarch of them all"

John Barleycorn
Remember to make the hey chorus figure 'loopier'.
#5 - the Barleycorn figure does a kind of teardrop; the other two dancers
engaged in the hey do more of a figure 8 as they change positions
potentially adding a flourish when reaching the new 'home' spot

Second figure, the switch, originally had us going face to face and after
watching the video we are adjusting this. The active middle dancer
approaches the corner dancer (right shoulders) while the corner dancer
moves into the middle. Both of these then turn at the same time I'm sorry
I don't have the timing but suspect it is the last or the second to the
last beat of the phrase .

Similar to above, in the barn figure, everyone lifts off at the same time.
Recap: start of figure first corners come in with raised sticks, then
second corners, then the 4 dance around the figure in the middle and
reverse At the end of verse, all lift off their sticks and dance backwards
to place.

In the figure for the last verse (the weave)
l*ittle sir john and the nut brown bowl and brandy in the glass.*
two important points, The #1 for this verse (usually Adrienne as 'blue')
comes quite a ways up so when the rest of the dancers fall behind there's
more room for the weave.
Second point is to make the weave loopy rather than tight I think it
looked good that way and perhaps safer. or
Finally, as we go into the circle, If the dancers are not back in original
home position when the music ends, we are going to review this and
potentially work it out Thursday as we've had pretty good luck getting back
to our home spots.

The
when the drumming starts the dancers begin to dance and scythe the sticks
but very low, then move in so the clash onto the Barleycorn stick is on 8.
Then wait till the push off,
At the push off simultaniously lift the stick and dance backwards 4 counts
to home corner and then (possibly immediately) move forward in low scything
motion cross body first
at the same time, Barleycorn will come forward
fall behind Barleycorn scythe the sticks and move into place following
Barleycorn out.

Whew, hopefully clearer than mud!
Linda
